Only as a warrior can one withstand the path of knowledge. A warrior cannot complain or regret anything. His life is an endless challenge, and challenges cannot possibly be good or bad. Challenges are simply challenges.
—Carlos Castaneda
Each new code revealed provided José with a series of initiations upon a single path that opened him to new levels of knowledge. The Second Year of Prophecy was a cycle of initiation and challenge for José. If he had not attained certainty about his mission on this planet, he might not have weathered the particular testings presented that year.
On July 26, 1994—New Year’s Day—he lay in a hammock in pain from his sciatica condition in Puerto Morales and reviewed the past year. He had never known such a year of transformation. Never would he have thought that he would find himself on a whirlwind tour throughout South America, telling people that they had to change the calendar, especially people in predominantly Catholic South America. No one in the whole history of the Gregorian calendar had taken on the mission of leading a personal and prophetic crusade to change the calendar. In the 1930s, it had not been one or two people trying to change the calendar, but the entire League of Nations. Traveling on a shoestring budget for seven weeks, setting up different meetings, talks, and events to inform people of the Telektonon Prophecy, telling people to replace the Gregorian calendar with the Thirteen Moon calendar—this in itself was profoundly challenging with initially little support.
He knew that personally he had been shifted into another reality altogether, a reality where he could no longer be bound to outward self-perceptions. This new reality was more real and precious to him than anything, and he knew he had to cultivate and nurture it. He understood that everything he was experiencing was a deep testing on the inner planes. Absolutely nothing was going to daunt him from fulfilling his mission.
Early the next morning, José awoke from a dream in which he was trying to put earrings in his ears, but they kept pricking his fingers. Still groggy, he felt something moving through his hair. It was a scorpion! When he reached up to pull it out, it bit him on his left thumb and then again on his right index finger before he was able to throw it onto the floor. Great pain surged through his body as he watched the scorpion scurry away rapidly with its stinger in the air.
Lloydine hopped on a bicycle to find help. She found an acquaintance named Jorge who assured her the bite wasn’t fatal and gave her medicinal herbs to lessen the pain. By the time she returned, José could barely move. She gave him the herbs to chew and told him that Jorge said he should be prepared for a psychedelic experience. Relieved to know that the bite was not fatal, he gladly took the herbs and relaxed into the experience. With the scorpion medicine surging through his system, his surroundings pulsed with color and light, while his energy soared. In his heightened condition, he noticed lizards and geckos turning bright pink as they made love on the ceiling rafters above his bed.
He thought it quite a synchronicity that the scorpion bite came shortly after the beginning of the Red Lunar Moon year on the Thirteen Moon calendar. Red is the color of initiation. Lunar is the tone of Challenge, bearing the scorpion as its totem animal. He felt a deep connection with his teacher, Chögyam Trungpa, who called his esoteric teachings the “scorpion teachings,” and often drew red scorpion seals on his calligraphies. The power of the scorpion was to transmute negative, even deadly circumstances, into beneficial ones. Trungpa also gave Shambhala teachings that contained a “scorpion seal” that he had received in Mexico.
At this time, José kept a journal entitled: “Earth Wizard’s Little Book of Practical Conduct.” In the journal, he wrote the “two laws of the wizard’s self-ethical code of conduct:”
1. You always receive what you need. No more and no less. Exactly when you need it. No sooner and no later.
2. Always do what you need to do for yourself, exactly when you need to do it (no more no less).
Conscious knowledge of the power of the Law of Time will effect the swiftest transformation of human civilization and values ever known.
—José Argüelles, The Dynamics of Time
While flying back to Tucson from New York, José noticed that the man sitting in front of him was reading a book about space dynamics that contained information such as how to get a rocket from the moon to Mars. José reflected that if there is a dynamics of space, then surely there must be a dynamics of time!
Back home, he became obsessed with this notion. Perceiving that the dynamics of space was based on Cartesian coordinates x, y, and t (for time), he saw how all modern Western thinking was built up from these coordinates that describe space in a linear fashion, making it easy to project and “conquer” vast domains of space. He contemplated the radical difference or jump from the common state of mind of space to the mind of time. It seemed almost impossible to talk about the two perceptions in the same breath or context.
One day, while contemplating this issue, José was concentrating on his Excalibur crystal. He had received this double terminated crystal on January 24, 1985, his forty-sixth birthday, from his friend Dominique in New York City. Previous to the delivery of the crystal, José experienced the activation of his visionary “holographic radial tunnel” experiences, as he called them. He had long experienced similar optical experiences that were not holographic but psychedelically vivid nonetheless, only without drugs. This first occurred to him in 1974 in a meditation hall in Berkeley, California.
In 1987 in Boulder he had biofeedback brain testing and found out his alpha waves were extraordinarily high. Since they were accompanied by much visionary information, José reasoned it was due to his connection with the noosphere.
These “optical” experiences would continue throughout his life and reveal many different visions, and because he never knew when they might occur, he gave up driving for good. José knew from his own experience that the intrinsic visionary capacity of the eye and optical nerve are profound. This kind of vision exists in the optical nerve; it’s the radiative geometry that gives the sense of another world or fourth-dimensional world, as he came to understand it. In light of these experiences, José also considered the radial symmetry of crystals.
He knew that crystals were powerful transmitting and receiving devices. For over 12 years José regularly meditated upon crystals. Their form, structure, and interior had the capacity to pull him in and guide him through interior visionary experiences. He made many drawings of crystals, traveled inside the crystals with his mind, and saw many multidimensional landscapes. Crystals, particularly those made of quartz, have been employed in the third dimension to serve as the basis for many technologies. In the earliest two-way radio sets, unless both sets had quartz crystals of the same thickness (frequency) they were unable to “talk” to one another.
Quartz crystal is also at the heart of electronic wristwatches and computers. In the electronic watch the quartz crystal vibrates at a certain number of times per second. A small computer in the watch counts up the number of vibrations, and when it’s counted up enough to equal a second, the second indicator advances by one. When this has happened sixty times the minute indicator advances by one, and so forth. In this way the crystal has been used to further the mechanization of time. But what about the fourth dimensional use of crystals?
While gazing at the double terminated crystal (that he called Excalibur), José entered a deep meditation and found himself at the center of the crystal with its six sides surrounding him and felt its central axis running through and congruent with his central axis or spine. Within the crystal he was aware of the North and South Pole and experienced simultaneously the linear universe and in the middle of it, the radial universe. Inside the crystal he received a clear transmission about the fourth-dimensional “dynamics of time” as opposed to the third-dimensional “dynamics of space.” Time is faster than the speed of light. Time is instantaneous throughout the universe.
Holding the crystal, he realized that, as a radial form of space, the crystal is originally programmed by geometries of time. All matter arises from a geometry based on an underlying matrix of number. This is the basis of what Johann Kepler put forth when he saw that geometry existed before creation. José saw that when a thought from the higher dimensions is released into the material plane, it immediately takes the form of a crystal; it “crystallizes.” He contemplated the power of the crystal to hold its memory of form over untold eons; he knew this was the key that opened the mind to experience other levels of reality.
At the solstice event, the winds blew strongly through the main dome where José gave his late-morning presentation. During a break in the middle of the talk, two mysterious Native American men appeared who said they were sent to inform José of Tony Shearer’s death. The two shared with José a strange “extraterrestrial UFO stone” and asked him to hold it for a few moments. He held it briefly and passed it to his apprentice. The two men then disappeared just as mysteriously as they had come.
When José returned for the second half of the talk he was visibly emotionally shaken and with tears in his eyes he began to explain who Tony was as a bearer of the Mayan prophetic lineage. As he spoke, a side door was blown open by the wind and suddenly and mysteriously a whirlwind of leaves, dust and energy entered and swirled in the air over the participants heads even as José gave an impassioned account of Tony’s life work and mission. The spirit danced, spinning and hovering in the room for some time while the prophecy was shared with those gathered there. Eventually, as José’s energy shifted, the whirlwind changed course and the main door of the yurt was blown open. The wind spirit departed through it. In the Dreamspell system, Tony was White Magnetic Wind, Kin 222, signifying the communication of spirit.
José was deeply affected by the news of Tony’s passing. After the talk the winds continued to howl, and he felt deep surges of energy rush through him. Suddenly, he felt very strange. A deep power and unshakable knowledge entered him—a new channel was opening—and he wanted his apprentice near in order to transmit mind-to-mind what he was receiving.
José and his apprentice went into a field and lay down; a lone hawk circled around them in the sky. He felt the depths of the power of prophecy surging through him and flashed onto his vision at Teotihuacán. He then flashed to Tony who gave him the prophecy and prophetic dates, then to the recent ceremony at Teotihuacán, and finally Tony’s death. He knew that true power was a gift from spirit. This power could only be used for a specific purpose. He was told that true power is given when knowledge, will, and destiny are aligned. This is a function of the Divine Plan.
Then came an inner release—and a new level of understanding and certainty: José knew the prophecy of 2012 was precise. He knew that the ending of the ninth hell in 1987 was the beginning of the time of prophecy; 1987-2012 is the time allotted for the human race to prepare itself for a shift in consciousness.
